Xiao Lao Wang Hotpot @ Sungai Buloh New Village

This post actually very long overdue but due to my hectic workload for the past months, I was unable to blog about this. But better late than never right? Xiao Lao Wang Hotpot Restaurant was just recently opened about 2 months ago? I always enjoyed having a Hotpot session or steamboat session with a bunch of friends.  But it is very much a hassle to actually make the whole hotpot or steamboat session on your own. Sure enough, the dining experience is always warm and friendly, but preparing and cleaning up afterwards is usually a turn off especially for me.

The main problem with hotpot or steamboat restaurants these days is they actually serve cheap and low quality food with usually meat that are not fresh at all. So here I am, to judge if Xiao Lao Wang is not your typical hotpot restaurant or they are no different from most hotpot restaurants I went before.

Price wise, it seems quite reasonable considering the variety you will get out of those set. It wasn't too steep considering they are located within an industrial area and small town. Looking at the price, I might actually choose to dine here on a regular basis.

One of the highlights of Xiao Lao Wang is the condiments they provided over here. There a large variety of condiments which includes chilli sauce, red chilli, ginger, coriander, mushroom sauce etc. They actually provide a list of combinations that you could try. The one thing that I am actually confused with their lists is that the quantity they proposed are actually quite little. So in the end, you still need to match it up to your liking. I had a personal favorite which I actually pair it up myself.

Notice the bowl on the bottom left? That was my own combination and Bok mentioned it is good. Actually, it was nothing much to shout about although I seemed to be bragging here. It just closely resembles the awesome homemade sauce that my Dad did at home. It consists of coriander, chilli - lots of them, sesame oil, sesame sauce, soya sauce and a bit of the garlic oil. Do try them out and let me know how it taste.

Usually there are nothing much to be talk about for a hotpot or steamboat review. other than the soup. The soup they provided in Xiao Lao Wang is actually pretty unique. They come in two flavours of Pork Bone & Stomach with Chicken Soup and Salmon Head with Tomato Soup.

Salmon Head with Tomato Soup.
The Salmon Head with Tomato soup was actually prepared with Salmon Fish Head. That is actually pretty unique as I never had soup prepared with it. The taste was actually pretty unique but I still felt it is not strong enough. The deep fried salmon head taste was not that apparent and it needed a little more push to the taste. But this was 2 months back, I hope the soup is much better now. However, being a soup base for steamboat and hot pot, it is normal to be a little bland as it would need other ingredients to fully bring out its flavour after that. There is another reason why I complain about the lack of taste with this soup. The reason is at the next paragraph.

Pork Bone & Stomach with Chicken Soup
My personal favorite out of these two soups would be this one. It is full of flavour and the soup is very very sweet. I later found out that they actually uses "kampung chicken" instead of the normal chicken to prepare this soup. That explains the sweetness of the soup and I would definitely not mind having this soup every single day of my life. Now you understand why I complained that the first soup is a bit lacking.

My personal favorite pig stomach from the soup. The chewy and juicy texture is definitely commendable. Without further ado, I'm here to present you the list of food available at Xiao Lao Wang at Sungai Buloh New Village.

My verdict is the meat slices of chicken, pork and beef are definitely served fresh. A must order over here would be the Smoked Duck. The duck meat was smoked to perfection and very flavourful as well. The table had lots of that and it is definitely one of the highlight over here. However, it was unfortunate that the live mud crab was not fresh like I anticipated. The  texture was a bit off but we were informed that those crabs were actually fresh and arrived the restaurant that morning alive. Probably there is a little mishandling in storing them but definitely hope it could be better which the owner actually promised to look into immediately and improvise. I love it when a restaurant owner took seriously the feedback of customers and work on it immediately.

Double Liver and Smoked Duck Claypot Rice
Twin Sausage Claypot Rice
The two claypot rice we had are delicious. The seasoning was done nicely and the meat portion for both claypot rice are provided generously.

Overall, I felt that if I were to look for a good hotpot place, this place can deliver. They are one of the few steamboat and hotpot that I felt worth going considering the ingredients they used are fresh. Downside for me is that it is a little too far from my place though.
