Manmaru Homemade Udon

There are a lot of places for Japanese Udon around Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya. But good Japanese Udon are usually hard to find. It will be either the noodles aren't done right or the broth accompanying the udon is too bland. I was invited over to Manmaru Homemade Udon the other day, and they definitely have some of the best udon I ever tasted around here.

The udon over here in Manmaru are homemade and they go by a self service basis for dining. They have a huge variety of broths, condiments and ingredients for you to choose from to pair with your udon. The udon is then cooked to your preference upon order.

Through the glass wall, you can actually see how your udon were made and also their preparation process. I've never seen anyone made any udon before and this is a truly interesting experience.

カケうどん Kake Udon - RM8.90 (S) | RM10.90 (B)
The Kake Udon, probably the most basic udon dish, is something you can order if you don't felt like anything too fancy. The udon noodles were very chewy and smooth. The chewiness and elasticity of the noodles are definitely one of the best I had ever tried. Now I haven't been to Japan, so this udon definitely set the standard of expectations I had when I visit Japan one day. The broth was quite flavourful and fragrant as well.

ニクうどん Niku Udon - RM12.90 (S) | RM14.90 (B)
My favourite dish of the night is definitely this Niku Udon. Most probably it is due to the tender thin beef slices they have over here. The chewy beef slices compliment the noodles well and it adds depth the broth's taste as well.

梅うどん Ume Udon - RM10.90 (S) | RM12.90 (B)
A very unique dish from Manmaru Udon is definitely this Ume Udon. For this broth, you have to add in the amount of pickle plum, (the red patch above) to the broth before taking in. The sourish and slight sweetness of the broth is something unique but unfortunately not to my liking. Anyone who wanted to try something different, you can opt for this sourish version of Udon.
カレーうどん Curry Udon - RM10.90 (S) | RM12.90 (B)

Staying true to the Japanese curry taste and flavour, the curry broth is both fragrant and creamy. The curry is not much spicy, like what a Japanese curry would be. If you are into Japanese curry, this slightly sweet and yet not spicy curry udon might be to your liking,

キムチうどん Kimchi Udon - RM11.90 (S) | RM13.90 (B)
The Kimchi Udon is also one of the highlight for most people. The slight sourish and spicy broth is definitely very appetising.

クリームコーンうどん Cream Corn Udon - RM12.90 (S) | RM14.90 (B)
The Cream Corn Udon was unfortunately my least favourite among all the udon offered. Don't get me wrong that it tasted bad. The cream corn broth is very rich, thick and creamy. However, the creaminess of the broth and the chewy thick udon doesn't go too well with my tastebud. Would definitely prefer a light broth to go with my udon.

ざるうどん Zaru Udon - RM8.90 (S) | RM10.90 (B)
Zaru Udon is the cold variation of udon noodles. And this is definitely one of my favourite among all the udon. Take a mouth serving of udon and dipped it in the cold broth, it tasted heavenly. It is a perfect dish for a hot weather and somehow lately, I had been really digging these cold Japanese noodles.

釜揚げうどん Kamaage Udon - RM12.90
This type of serving is not something you would get everyday here in Malaysia. The noodles were served in this wooden bowl, you just need to take the noodles and dip it into the Kamaage sauce before eating it. The authentic way of eating Kamaage Udon but the wooden bowls are unfortunately limited in this outlet. It isn't easy to get them here in Malaysia.

鴨せいろうどん Kamo Seiro Udon - RM13.90 (S) | RM15.90 (B)
The Kamo Seiro Udon had a duck based broth for you to dip your udon in. Absolutely delicious.

ぶっかけうどん Bukake Udon - RM9.90 (S) | RM11.90 (B)
As wrong as it sounds to most....erm...guys..and some girls, this is actually another cold soba variation but it is actually with a fish broth. Yes, real fish.

白身魚の天ぷら White Fish Tempura - RM3/piece
野菜かき揚げ天ぷら Yasai kakiage Tempura - RM1.80/pc
海老天ぷら Ebi Tempura (Prawn) - RM3.80/pc
茄子天ぷら Nasu Tempura (Brinjal) - RM1.50/pc
ピーマン天ぷら Green pepper Tempura - RM1.80/pc
えのき天ぷら Enoki Tempura - RM1.50/pc
レンコン天ぷら Renkon Tempura (Lotus root) - RM1.50/pc
These are some of the condiments you can order with your udon. Manmaru Udon have one of the best  Ebi Tempura I tasted and obviously that was my favourite among all the side dishes. The prawns used were very fresh and the succulent prawn were fried perfectly in their tempura batter. There is no oily after taste to the tempura at all.

半熟たまご Hanjuku Tamago - RM2/pc
Another highlight of their side dishes is definitely this Hanjuku Tamago. The egg were boiled to a hard egg white but still runny golden yolk on the inside. If you like eggs, this is a must try. I bet you can't get enough of the eggs here.

Manmaru Homemade Udon definitely offered some of the best udon I had over here in Malaysia. They done a lot of things right with their udon texture. Basically, their udon goes well with almost every single type of broth available. Light ones for me though. The chewiness and elasticity of the noodles are such rare gem over here in Malaysia. Seriously.
