Golden Orchid Oriental Thai Cuisine @ Damansara Jaya

I believe Thai cuisines are one of Malaysians's favorite foreign cuisines. Probably it was due to an almost similarity of having a hint of spiciness and sourness in most dishes. I myself is a fan of Thai dishes. It is a wonder really as I am not too fond of sourish food. Recently, I had a chance to eat at a newly opened Thai restaurant in Damansara Jaya called Golden Orchid Restaurant. Here is my review of that particular place.

Parking was plentiful upon arriving at this area during dinner time. Probably it is due to being off working hours. The place was only opened last 28th March 2013, so I actually have high expectations for them. Because honestly, most restaurants are at their best when they newly opened.

Seafood Tom Yam: Small (RM25.00) / Large (RM45.00)
First to arrive at our table is their Seafood Tom Yam soup. A must try and also a must have dish for every Thai restaurant in Malaysia. The Tom Yam soup over in Golden Orchid was cooked with a nice blend of spiciness and sourness right for Malaysians' taste bud. I found the spiciness is just right for me and the sourness is purely appetizing as well. Although some of them told me that they still think it could go a bit spicier, I beg to differ. I do not really like my Tom Yam to be overly spicy till it numbs my tongue and made me unable to savor the soup properly. The ingredients used were really generous. The soup bowl is practically filled with prawns, squids, mushrooms etc.

Kembong Fish Platter: RM18.00
If you ask me, this seems more like a Malay style dish than a Thai dish. However, I am no expert and the fish is just typically fried. It looks and taste typically like a normal fried fish. Despite that, the appeal of this dish lies in the chilli paste used to compliment the fish and vegetables. The chilli was homemade with a recipe of their own. The chilli paste is spicy with a hint of sweet and sour in it. It is kind of like the chilli paste used in most Chicken Rice dish but this is much more flavorful. The spiciness is obvious while it is not too watery as well.

Golden Orchid Special Fried Chicken: RM18.00
If you are ever here, this is a must order dish. The chicken were fried crispy brown with spices, dried chilli and curry leaves. The chicken bits were crunchy and the meat was tender as well. Definitely not overcooked.  I highly recommend this dish to order if anyone of you really do pay a visit to Golden Orchid.

Thai Style Fish: Small Small (RM38.00) / Large (RM58.00)

This fish was steamed and served with thai style broth. For those who enjoy a sourish dish with a little hint of spiciness, this could be your dish. However, it did not really fare well for me. Somehow I felt the fish was a little overcooked that night. I still think it has a nicely cooked broth but this dish did not hit my spots like the fried chicken and tom yam did. I may probably enjoy this more if it wasn't for the earlier delicious Tom Yam soup.

Keng Som Steam Fish: Small (RM38.00) / Large (RM58.00)
The Keng Som Steam Fish is generically sweet and sour with hint of spiciness with it. The fish still fairs average as well may be because the broth is not as flavorful as the earlier Tom Yam soup (which I still had it in my bowl that time). I still prefer the Thai Style Fish over this one.

Stir Fried Fiddlehead Fern: RM13.00
Fiddlehead Fern is one of my favorite vegetables. The definitely have the crunchiness that I adored in certain vegetables and this dish was stir fried with chilli paste, it is heavenly. It is a simple dish but it was cooked very well and I was surprised that it wasn't too oily either. This is definitely good.

Thai Style Omelette: RM15.00
Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. This had to be one of the best Thai Style Omelette I had. To top it off, it wasn't too oily as well. Due to nature of preparing this dish, the omelette were usually too much on the oily side. It had a very slight hint of sourness in it and this dish is also highly recommended if you pay a visit here.

Buttermilk Prawn: RM38.00
The buttermilk prawn is not only fragrant but the broth is very creamy and thick in texture just like how I like my buttermilk prawns to be. Cooked with chillies and curry leaves, this dish is heavenly as the prawns used are equally fresh too. This is definitely one of the best buttermilk prawn I had in awhile. If you are a fan of such dish, I recommend you pay a visit to try this out.

Thai Fish Cake: RM14.00 (4 piece)
This is their homemade fish cake and fried to golden brown as well. The outside texture is definitely crispy and also being soft on the inside. Quite nice to bite and chew into.

Golden Orchid Special BBQ Combo platter: RM68.00
Golden Orchid Special BBQ Combo platter is definitely my favorite dish of the night. Perfectly grilled squids, prawns and cooked lamb served with their homemade sauce, this dish is heavenly. Surprisingly the lamb meat was not well done, probably about 75% which is just right. A lot of restaurant made a mistake of cooking their mutton way over the limit. The sauce is sourish with a slight hint of spiciness and also mint. If I could, I would like to order the entire dish to myself.

Candied Tapioca: RM4.80
Next up were desserts. The candied tapioca is definitely a huge portion for desserts. Served with a bit of coconut milk, I'm guessing most tapioca lovers can go crazy over it.

Tub Tim Krob / Red Ruby: RM4.80
The Red Ruby dessert is definitely a must have dessert from Golden Orchid. The fragrant sweet jackfruit served with coconut milk and shaved ice is a heavenly combo. The Red Ruby were actually chestnut prepared along with sago if I'm not mistaken where crunchy on the inside, soft and chewy on the outside. Definitely a dessert delight. This dish or the red rubies to be exact was freshly prepared daily. This means the freshness is definitely guaranteed and also unfortunately stocks are limited. If they are sold out of red rubbies, you will not be able to enjoy this dessert even if they have truck loads of jackfruits and coconut milk. My first night here, the dessert were quickly out and I couldn't even get my second serving of it.

Overall, it is a very pleasant dining experience here. Although most newly opened restaurants are like that, but I definitely hope they will keep up their level of service and food quality in the future. With the level of enthusiasm the owners have, I sure this place will turn out great in the future.
