Sri Suria Curry House @ SS3

The one thing I really enjoy being a Malaysian is definitely I could enjoy food from different ethnic groups. And the one thing I really enjoy is Indian banana leaf rice. But then again, there wasn't much good banana leaf restaurant nearby where I stay. There is one I frequent in Jalan Gasing but then again to be honest, I am only there for their deep fried dishes. Let's leave that aside to avoid comparison for now.

I was informed that there is this new curry house opening in SS3 or specifically, at the side of Sungai Way. It would be just a mere 5 minutes drive away from where I stay so why not right?





The restaurant had started its operation here since April 2013 and I would say that's fairly new. It wasn't that crowded and the interior looks pretty clean. Yeap, pretty new alright. According to the owner of Sri Suria, they are serving cuisines from Southern India, altered to suit the Malaysians' tastebuds. To be honest, I do not even know the difference between Southern Indian dishes and Nothern Indian dishes and even after this session, I didn't know too. Apologies for that.



The fragrance from the food showcased at the entrance of this restaurant was practically begging me to devour them. They do not have as much selection as most banana leaf restaurants but it doesn't really matter to me. This is because sometimes when a restaurant have too much variety of dishes to choose from, they usually fare below average.

Vegetarian Dishes
What really appeals to me is Sri Suria serves some really good looking vegetarian curry dishes. I did not have them in this review session but I did return to their place and have a taste of them. Surprisingly, the curry gravy and flavour of these vegetarian dishes did not lose to their non-vegetarian varieties. This is a plus point as meat brings in extra flavour to the curry gravy and to be tasting so similar to them, it only means how well done are them.

Fried-To-Order Varieties


Their Fried-To-Order selections are quite limited if you ask me. They only have chicken and 4 types of fishes. To be honest, I was hoping to see prawns and squids to be among the selections but I was disappointed. Let's just hope they can pack a real good fried chicken then.

I will first review the dishes we got to try on that particular day first before moving on to their main dish which is their briyani banana leaf rice.

Chicken Kurma (RM6)
This Chicken Kurma or Chicken Korma was splendidly spiced to perfection. The spiciness of the gravy is definitely not for the weak and it is perfect to my tastebud. The only stereotype that I agree with our Indian brothers is they can really whip out a wicked curry dish. This Chicken Korma I would rate it better than the usual ones I had at Mamak restaurants. It is not only fragrant and flavourful but the meat used are cooked nicely. It definitely did not taste "undercooked" or "overcooked" at all, the common mistakes most Indian or Mamak restaurants had. This the Indian version of Chicken Curry.
Mutton Varuval (RM6.50)
I always had this Mutton Varuval whenever I went for Indian Banana Leaf, but I wouldn't what exactly the dish is made of. (would really appreciate it if any readers care to comment and inform me about it) I always assume the meat are lightly fried and seasoned with a type of chilli paste. The chewy and tender mutton goes so well with the chilli paste and I would highly recommend this, even for their vegetarian variation which I had tried on a separate day.

Chicken Varuval (RM5.50)
Chicken Varuval was cooked the same way as above and I would say it taste exactly the same though. But I personally enjoy mutton over chicken meat at any given time.

Dahl Gravy
What I love about the Dahl gravy over here in Sri Suria is that the gravy is not watery or even too thick. I personally felt that most indian and mamak restaurants serve watery dahl (probably due to cost) and some higher end restaurants serves extremely thick dahl and that turns out to taste more like mashed potato than gravy. Sri Suria done it right in my opinion. It wasn't too spicy so I believe people with low tolerance of spicy food can enjoy this as well.

Yogurt
This yogurt served in metal cup was to cool off the heatiness of the food served. If your tongue is feeling like it is on fire, have a spoonful of this to cool down your tongue and throat.

Pickled Plum
This is a type of pickled plum if I am not mistaken. The pickled plum was sweet and a little spicy as well. Not exactly my favourite combo of taste but Caroline seems to be really enjoying this as she had literally devoured more than half of it herself.

Rasam
Rasam is a type of Indian soup which is both spicy and sour. This was my first time having this soup as I was never really informed of its existence despite the many times I went for banana leaf rice. I guess it really does make a difference if you are out eating with real foodies. I enjoyed mine garnished with coriander which they did that day, and the sour and spicy taste is definitely very appetising. No wonder it was meant to be drink before a meal as it really opens up my appetite.

Chicken Biryani Rice @ RM10
Briyani Banana Leaf Rice @ RM8
Finally, the reason I am here for, their Briyani Banana Leaf Rice. The three side dish are extremely good and although not a fan of salad, I enjoy the Indian Salad provided above. The yogurt in it definitely neutralise the spiciness I had the entire session and it just encourages me to eat more. The briyani I would definitely rate it as one of the best I had. I am not sure if anyone agrees with me, but I found most briyani to be too oily and overdosed with spices. It is like I am eating the herbs and spices rather than just the rice. While some decided to showcase their generosity through the amount of spices used, some decided to showcase their stinginess with the lack of taste and spices. In Sri Suria, they have a perfect balance of herbs and spices with rice as well. I am sure that most people would prefer theirs to be heavily spiced and flavoured but not for me. Even rice have their own unique taste that shouldn't be overshadowed. It is called Briyani Rice for some reason and not Briyani Herbs with rice. I love their briyani rice for the fact that the taste wasn't overshadowed by herbs and spices. I came here a couple of times after this review with my parents and they too agree with this on that matter.

Fried Chicken (RM5)
The fried chicken here is quite pricey if you ask me. I would prefer it to be cheaper but then again, most Indian restaurants charges their fried chicken exorbitantly high these days. Luckily, it didn't change the fact that Sri Suria's fried chicken to be extremely delightful. The skin is fried to crispy perfection as you can see from the picture above. The meat was still juicy and not overcooked as well. Perfect.

Fried Ikan Tenggiri
Fried Fish
I wasn't too fond of their fried fish selection though. It wasn't that fresh during my visit that time and I wish they would improve this. But the seasoning they used for frying is still top notch.

Mango Lassi @ RM6
Mango Lassi is a type of Indian dessert and it is actually Mango Yogurt with spices. The ones in Sri Suria tasted really good as well. After all that heat and spiciness you packed to your stomach and mouth, this Mango Lassi provide a very soothing effect when drank. I would strongly recommend this drink if you are dining here and decided to pack in a lot of spicy food.

Fanta + Longan + Soda (RM6.50)
Their Fanta, Longan and Soda combination is something you should give it a try too.
Three Layered Iced Tea 
Their three layered iced tea have a good balance of milk, tea and also coconut sugar to boot.

Teh Tarik (RM1.50)
What really impress me is their version of Malaysians' Favourite Drink, the "Teh Tarik" or stretched tea. The milk tea was produced with a high quality tea leaves transported directly from Cameron Highlands. The owner said they were more pricey but they wanted to be a little different than at mamak restaurants to appeal to their consumers. The tea is fragrant and wasn't too sweet as well. This will definitely goes well with a pack of nasi lemak or roti canai in the morning.

Bru Coffee Susu Lembu (RM3.50)
This Bru Coffee with cow's milk is also one of their unique selling drink in Sri Suria. Brewed with high quality coffee beans with cow's milk, you bet the fragrance is definitely there. Like their Teh Tarik, their coffee wasn't too sweet as well, an option that I love because drinks outside lately had been sweet on the scale of extreme.

Overall, I felt the food in Sri Suria is quite good and definitely comparable to the top Indian restaurants around Petaling Jaya and Kuala Lumpur. On the down side, their location is actually a bit secluded and I think they should deserve more customers than certain places. Do check them out if you had a cravings for Indian Banana Leaf Rice
